Katie Riley has hands-on knowledge of building performance-driven environmental programs – both from the ground up and throughout the different stages of development – that help people make better investments in conservation. During her time at Environmental Incentives, Katie has managed multiple projects that create incentives for private landowners to preserve and create wildlife habitat and other ecosystem services on working lands. These include 1) a water quality trading program in the Klamath River watershed in California and Oregon, 2) a program to support market-based investments in conservation practices that improve water quality and habitat viability in the Mokelumne River watershed of California, and 3) 7 habitat exchanges to facilitate effective mitigation and conservation for endangered, threatened and candidate bird species throughout the Western United States. Katie specializes in the development of simulation games that have been used by multiple stakeholders to give diverse audiences a deeper understanding of how performance-based programs work on the ground, and is a standing guest lecturer for the University of Maryland. Katie holds a Master of Environmental Science and Management from the Bren School at UC – Santa Barbara, where she specialized in environmental economics and policy, and a BA from Virginia Tech.
