Briar is an Infrastructure and Engineering Climate Specialist focused on humanitarian food and livelihoods assistance. Briar leverages her technical civil engineering background as well as her humanitarian aid and field experience to support USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) through the Technical, Operational, and Program Support (TOPS) institutional support contract.
Before joining EI, Briar worked for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)’s Social and Economic Analysis Branch, studying post-fire hazard impacts to resources and ecosystems. She previously led research and conducted fieldwork for her PhD focused on building local technical construction capacity for safer housing construction in multi-hazard environments. During this time, she also joined InterAction’s Shelter Team as a Shelter Research Fellow, where she studied coverage of humanitarian shelter and settlements assistance. Before her PhD, Briar managed her undergraduate university’s Engineers Without Borders Thailand Team, where she led the design, implementation, and evaluation of Slow Sand Filtration systems. In each of these positions, Briar has applied her technical engineering and research experience to work on multi-disciplinary projects in domestic and international contexts.
Briar is passionate about ensuring people have access to safe, resilient infrastructure. She is very excited about opportunities to integrate civil engineering, climate adaptation, and humanitarian aid.
