Juan Carlos Martínez-Sánchez is Program Director of the USAID-funded Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Environment Support Mechanism.  In this role he leads a team of EI and partner organization staff to strengthen the design, management and evaluation of USAID environment programs across the region.

A conservation biologist with extensive international experience in protected areas management, biodiversity and rural development, he received his PhD from the University of Washington (Seattle) researching the environmental credentials of coffee certification.

Juan Carlos is best known for his passion for birds and for training young conservationists. He has devoted his career to building bridges between conservation professionals from developed countries and their counterparts in developing countries.

When he’s not working, Juan Carlos enjoys spending time in nature, traveling with his wife Loretta, and taking things apart to see how they work, from computers to appliances to cars.
