Matt is an environmental engineer and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Technical Specialist focused on design and implementation of life-saving WASH interventions in humanitarian and development contexts. Matt leverages his technical WASH background for USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) to inform policy, shape research and capacity building programs, and advise humanitarian WASH activities in East and Central Africa.

Before working at EI, Matt led WASH research projects and conducted fieldwork to address the growing threat that chemical pollution poses to global health. Matt’s previous work focused on the intersection of the environment and public health, where anthropogenic impacts are disproportionately affecting health and human flourishing in underserved and marginalized communities globally. He has experience designing and implementing WASH programs in rural communities in Southeast Asia, and he has been a consistent advocate for an increased focus on water quality in humanitarian and development WASH programming and policy.

In addition to his international work, Matt has developed novel low-cost water treatment methods for organic micropollutants in drinking water, stormwater, and wastewater; led research teams on domestic and international water reuse; and is developing new risk assessment tools for chemical contaminants in drinking water.

Matt believes that evidence-based, appropriate WASH interventions can save lives, alleviate suffering, and promote healthy communities and environments in underserved communities around the world.
